Chronically Over-Volunteered

vol

At some point in the last six months, I believe that I said that I wanted to be involved in my daughter’s education. Yes, that’s right. I think that the universe heard me. In fact, I think that it heard me far too loudly and clearly. It now seems that I am volunteering for almost every aspect of my daughter’s education. Hmm. While I realize that September is the season for signing up your child for classes, I didn’t realize I was signing myself away as well.

We’re home schooling, of course. A few days a week, we’re doing some formal school-like activities at home. My daughter will also be taking a French class. Thankfully, I’m not teaching that.

When she goes to our local parent participation alternate school two mornings a week, I’ll be helping out there too. Just cooking and gardening, nothing too fancy, but I’ll still be helping out. I’m looking forward to that.

Then there is church. Everyone who attends our church has their own volunteer interests, and mine has been cooking the soup for the congregation for the past few years. This year, it’s Sunday School. Yes, after years of having my daughter feel worried about leaving me, I’m now going to be assisting with the Sunday School classes so that we don’t have the regular Sunday morning freak out about leaving mom.

Then on Thursday, we went to sign up for the only extracurricular that she was interested in: Sparks, the very earliest level of Girl Guides and Scouts. Lo and behold, it seems that the group is full. But if I volunteer as a leader, they can take more children, including mine. I just about fell over. My great plan to focus on the home learning adventures was rapidly fading away, and service to the many activities that my daughter is involved in is growing. The jury is still out on whether I’m volunteering for this one. I may need to exercise the two-letter “N” word at some point: no.

What about you? Are you signing up for things this time of year?
