Chuck Norris, Gays, and the Boy Scouts of America

You know all the Chuck Norris facts going around? Like behind “Chuck Norris’ beard is another fist.” Or, “Chuck Norris counted to infinity – twice.” How about “Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.” Although I’ve always thought of myself as a Bruce Lee girl, these always make me giggle.

His 40+ year career as an actor and martial artist along with these Chuck Norris facts cause TIME to proclaim Norris an “online cult hero” in 2006.

Too bad he showed a less than heroic attitude today in an article he wrote for AmmoLand.com.

Norris, a Republican, came out swinging at James Turley, a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) official, who has said that he will “work to seek a change” in the BSA policy banning gay scouts and leaders.

Now Norris didn’t come right out and say he was anti-gay, but he questioned Turley’s motives. He insinuated that perhaps Turley was looking to overturn the ban because of close ties with President Obama and his “pro-gay” administration.

Norris points out that Turley and his wife had dinner with the President and First Lady at the White House and how Ernst & Young (for whom Turley is the global chairman and CEO) is working with the Obama administration to honor young entrepreneurs.

He tries to draw connections between Turley’s pro-gay stance and the fact that Obama recently declared that “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month” should be celebrated by all military branches.

Norris points out that Turley is the only BSA national board member to oppose the “pro-traditional family” stance in the last 100 years. And that Obama, named the honorary president of the BSA in 2009, was unable to attend the 100th anniversary gala in February 2010.

Norris goes on to say that the BSA “BSA is as integral a part of American life and culture as hot dogs, baseball and Grandma’s apple pie.”

But, what if the hot dogs were turkey, the baseball players were on steroids, and Grandma was really a closeted lesbian?

I mean Norris talks about how he supports the BSA and the next generation, but apparently only if you are of a certain sexual preference. What? If you are gay, you can’t pitch a tent or tie a knot? If you are gay, you don’t deserve adult guidance as a child? And who’s to say that like the military, there aren’t already gay leaders and boy in the BSA?

I can’t understand Norris’ objection to helping any child – period. America isn’t “Leave It to Beaver” anymore. We aren’t all white, middle class people who are married with 2.5 children and a white picket fence. If Norris has a problem with Turley or Obama, that is fine, but I say leave the kids – the innocent kids – out of it.
