One of the areas that you may be called to serve is in a music capacity. There are several callings that involve music. They may be combined, or you may have just one depending on the size of your ward. A calling to provide or plan the music for the services is an important one because it invites in the spirit and it helps to set the moods for the meeting.
The ward music director is in charge of the ward music program. He may schedule special musical numbers, choose the hymns to match the topics of the talks and recommend people to serve in other callings. If there are several organists he may also set up a rotating schedule for the accompanists.
The choir director will direct the choir, and choose the songs that the choir sings. The ward music leader will conduct the hymns on Sunday. The ward accompanist plays the music on Sundays. Additionally you may be called to do these things in the auxillary callings as well.
I have lived in small wards where it is difficult to find people who can play the piano for Primary or Sacrament meeting. The contributions of the people who are able and willing to serve in these areas are very appreciated. It is truly a blessing to be able to play and sing.
If you want to learn to conduct, you can visit the section on music at the church’s website. It can take you through the process and help you to practice conducting before each meeting. This is a great resource to help improve your musical skills.
Additionally you may want to think about learning the piano or having your children learn the piano. These are wonderful skills to help serve in church, but they will also bless you in your home life. Learning to sing the hymns as a family can also benefit you and your children in many ways.
