As a parent you may consider having your child enroll in a life skills course in school or after school. These classes can be beneficial, as your child becomes more independent. The types of courses that fit in these categories can vary widely. It may be a class that you can take with your child to have some extra time together. It may be a class that you have her take by herself, so that she can stretch herself. Here are five possible classes.
1) You may consider having your child taking a basic cooking class. This is especially true if you can’t get him to help out in the kitchen at home. If your child has already mastered the basics and shows a flair for cooking you may consider signing her up for a gourmet cooking class that you can take together. Your child can take these through school or through an enrichment program offered through your county or community college.
2) A money management class in another important class for every individual to take. The younger your child learns these skills the better off he will be. A good class should cover basic budgeting, balancing a checkbook, making payments on time. They may also have students search for apartments, estimate bills, and budget daily expenses. These classes are available through school, and churches. There is a Boy Scout Merit Badge available that covers these topics as well. Teenagers may be more receptive to listening to someone else on this topic.
3) In addition to driver’s ed., you may want to have your child enroll in a basic auto repair class. If you have a child who simply will not attend this type of class, you need to make sure she can check the oil, and change a flat tire before letting her drive.
4) Time management classes can be beneficial. This is especially true for those who are preparing to leave for college. This will help your children learn how to balance the daily pressures of life and stay on top of things. It can be a big shift to move out on your own. These classes may give your children a heads up on the transition.
5) You may consider enrolling your teenager in a study skills course. You can enroll in these at school or through various programs available in your community. If your child is having a hard time keeping up with their homework a study skills class may help a great deal. A good course will teach your children how to plan their day and accomplish the tasks in simple steps.
