Clean Out Your Cleaning Supplies

Part of housekeeping is making sure that your house is in order but if your cleaning supplies aren’t, then you just might be wasting space. Think of the number of products and tools you have bought over the years in order to make your job of cleaning easier or more efficient. Do you still use all of them?

It’s a good idea to go through your cleaning supplies, products and tools to decide which ones are worth keeping. For instance, despite the fact that my house is 95% hardwood floors, I still keep a vacuum cleaner around. All that does is take up unnecessary space. For the two small rooms that have carpeting, I could invest in a much smaller handheld vacuum.

I also discovered that we have been housing in the back of our front hall closet, a carpet cleaner that not only isn’t useful but doesn’t even work. So that is going out to the trash.

As you begin to look through everything, you just might discover that long-lost cleaning tool you had forgotten about. But you are also likely to discover that you are holding onto products and tools that aren’t even being used.

This is a good opportunity to also create a list of things that need replacing, fixing or organizing. If you find yourself having three bottles of the same cleaning solution, with each of them containing just a little bit then you could combine them.

Don’t throw out or mix products without reading the labels first. There may be special instructions for disposing of them. And some products can cause serious injury if combined.

You should also put together a list of things you need. Some of the things that you should have on hand that you may need to purchase or stock up on includes rubber gloves, sponges to handle a variety of cleaning jobs around the house, empty spray bottles in case you want to make your own green-friendly concoction of a cleaning product and an old toothbrush to get to those hard-to-reach places.

This is also a good opportunity to put your cleaning products, tools and supplies where it makes sense. If you have to travel down two flights of steps to get the broom, you might want to move it to a more central location. Keep bathroom cleaning supplies in a locked cabinet in your bathroom, kitchen supplies in a kitchen cabinet and so on.

Take the time to clean out your cleaning supplies and housekeeping will be easier.
