Cleaning after Illness Has Hit Your Home

Although it is the last thing on earth we like to think about when we have just come out of a bout of sickness, cleaning is important. I have been on a cleaning rampage since the stomach flu hit my family big time.

It’s important to clean however, because there may be bacteria and germs left over. The last thing I want is to recover, only to get sick again.

Although there are lots of areas to clean after your family has been sick, I am going to focus on a couple of them. First, wash all of your bedding. You have likely been using it to keep warm and comfortable while you were sick. But you may be harboring germs as well.

I spent the entire day (once it was all over with), washing everyone’s bedding in hot water. It felt so nice to slip into freshly washed sheets later on. You know how you get that sense of “yuckiness” when your home has been hit with the flu bug? For some reason, clean sheets can help take that away.

Next is the bathroom. This is the one room that especially needs a thorough cleaning. But one of the first things you should do is replace your toothbrush. That has little to do with cleaning but it’s an important tip when you have been sick.

No matter how you feel about bleach, for me it is the only way to clean my bathroom. Especially after we have been sick. But you may have your own cleaning solution that is more green-friendly.

The real point is to do a good scrubbing, especially around the toilet. Clean the sink, the handles on the faucets and make sure you replace your linens. In fact, I would suggest that when your family is sick, you skip the linens and use paper towels instead.

What other tips do you have for cleaning after your family has been sick?
