Do you know how to clean pillows? Did you even know that they should be cleaned? Think of all of the billions of dust mites, skin flakes and other nasties that could be living in them right now. But don’t worry, here is a guide to help you take care of your pillow the right way.
Pillows should be fluffed on a daily basis to restore their shape. This helps redistribute down or the poly fill to keep them in good shape and last long.
Pillows can collect a lot of dust. Don’t believe me? Give a pillow a good hit in a sunny room, and you’ll see all of the dust that comes flying out. You can remove some of this dust by airing the pillow. Hand it outside to air and give it a couple of hits with a flat object, such as a spatula, but a breezy day is even better and will do the work for you. If you do use the beating method, don’t hit too hard, because you don’t want to damage the pillow. If you leave the pillow out in the sun, the heat will kill any bacteria.
Running the pillow through the dryer on a fluff or no heat setting will also help remove the dust from the pillow.
Every once in a while, you do need to launder your pillow. Oils from your face and your hair, moisturizers and more can get into your pillow. The best way to wash a pillow is by hand washing it in a bathtub or basin with some mild soap. You can also machine wash non-down pillow, although even careful washing can break down the fibers of a non-down pillow.
To dry the pillows, run them through your washer’s spin cycle to get as much water out as possible. Then either hang them outside on a sunny, breezy day, or place them between two thick towels, changing the towels when they get wet.
