Cleaning the Bathroom Sink

In this blog we are moving onto the bathroom, probably one of the least favorite places to clean for most anyone. This is definitely one room that you should keep up with on a daily basis. It will not only keep it cleaner but it will be more sanitary.

The sink can become one disgusting mess, especially if you have members of the family that don’t clean up after themselves. There is nothing more revolting to me than going to brush my teeth and seeing clumps of dried toothpaste or mustache hair in the sink.

So this is an area of the house that you really want to get other family members involved in. Teach your children and spouse to wash out the sink after every use. It takes a few seconds and it is much more appealing to use the sink.

Now cleaning a bathroom sink can be done a number of ways. The first thing is whether or not you are into cleaning products that are green-friendly or have chemicals. If you don’t mind chemicals, one of the best products to use is Lysol Mold and Mildew Remover with Bleach.

This takes care of not only any buildup of mildew or mold, but it whitens as well. However you do want to be sure that you are able to open a window or turn on a fan to blow out the fumes. They can become powerful, especially if you use this product on other bathroom fixtures.

But for some people the strong smell is also equated with clean, so if you want to do a really good job of not only cleaning but killing bacteria and viruses, then this product is for you.

However if you prefer to go a greener route, then you can use vinegar. I know that the idea of using vinegar for some people is not very appealing but it really does a great job in cleaning and you don’t have to worry about strong, obnoxious chemicals (minus the vinegar smell which does go away and is safer).

Keep in mind that vinegar is not recommended for certain types of sinks, such as granite. So you might want to do a little research before you use any type of product on your sink counter, to be sure its safe.

Vinegar dissolves water spots and gets rid of soap residue quickly. All you need is a sponge (soaked in vinegar) and you can wipe down the inside of your sink and the counter with it. Now you might think that you wipe away the vinegar using water. But vinegar is a great antibacterial agent, so the longer it stays on the surface the more bacteria that are going to be killed. Plus vinegar leaves a nice shine, so all you really have to do is wipe it down with a towel (or paper towels).

Of course the downside to vinegar is the smell but within a couple of hours, the smell will go away and you will have a thoroughly clean sink.

In another blog I will talk about maintaining the bathroom on a daily basis. But for now, hopefully these tips will help with the deep cleaning. Do you have any other tips for cleaning the bathroom sink?
