Spring is a good time to purge and organize the closets. But if you are facing a mountain of sweaters tumbling from shelves, a sea of shoes in disarray on the floor and clothing attacking you from all sides, then you might not know just where to start.
The key to organizing a closet, I have found is to start slowly and to use the right tools. Here are some of the ideas that are currently working for me in our master bedroom closet.
When we moved to our current home, we left behind closets and were huge and plentiful. We installed a large closet system in our bedroom closet, and it kept everything so organized! Unfortunately, we don’t have the same set up here, so things can quickly get out of control.
To keep my shoes in order, I purchase hard-sided plastic shoe boxes that could be stacked. These I placed on the high shelf in a fun pattern. If I get more shoes, I still have room for more boxes, and it has allowed me to use the space all of the way up to the ceiling. The boxes open in the front, so they don’t need to be unstacked to reach a particular pair of shoes. I naturally put my most used shoes in the bottom boxes for the easiest accessibility.
Previously, I had a haphazard combination of shoes in shoe boxes and shoes loose, some on the shelf and the overspill on the floor. Not only did this make finding a particular pair hard to do, but it also meant that my shoes were subject to damage.
Okay, I know shoes can be a weakness, but it is important to realize that closets are vestibules of limited space. Once that space is used up, there is no more room. So it is important to purge your shoes. Try them all on and discard your less than favorites or duplicates. If you must, store out of season shoes somewhere else, such as an attic or closet in a spare room.
