Baby clothes are a major point of excitement during pregnancy. Having a few outfits in the closet make the much anticipated arrival of the baby even more real. With my first pregnancy I was thrown two baby showers; one by my coworkers and the other by my sisters. Now that we are having a girl, most of the “baby boy” clothes that I received from friends and families simply will not work for a baby girl (especially the outfits that say “Thank Heaven for Little Boys”).
Several weeks ago I decided to organized the baby clothes that our son had grown out of and in the process I pulled out anything that would “work” for our baby girl. The girl friendly clothes were few and far between. I did manage to find a few “gender neutral” sleepers and some white onesies. These meager articles of baby clothing would hardly keep our baby girl clothed for a few days and they certainly would not be an indication of her gender. I needed to get some girl friendly baby clothes and since I do not anticipate anyone throwing me a baby shower for the second child, I needed to go shopping.
Since we are on a pretty tight budget these days, I headed to the local children’s consignment shop. After sorting through lots of clothing items that were not my taste, I found a few girly onesies and a couple sleepers. I focused on newborn and 0-3 month sizes keeping in mind that it will be winter when our baby is born.
I also frequent my favorite baby clothing boutique to see what has been marked down. Most of the time the clothes that I like are way too expensive, but every once in a while I find a garment or two that are less expensive new and on clearance than it would have been used at the consignment shop. I still need more layette pieces but with a few more visits to the consignment shop and a few more sales at the boutique, I am sure I will be able to find what I need for our baby girl!
