What I’ve been calling Beyonce’s Maple Syrup Diet is actually the Master Cleanse which was originally created by Stanley Burroughs many years ago. I do not advocate starvation diets. I prefer not to think of this as a “diet” but as a way to cleanse one’s system and break addictions prior to getting started on a sensible lifestyle plan. People have used it to break caffeine and chocolate addictions as well as those more serious addictions that I am simply not qualified to discuss here. I’ve used this cleanse successfully and been a long-time participant in the Beyonce’s Maple Syrup Diet Forum here at Families.com.
One question that keeps coming up, that I felt deserved a few blogs is how to come off the cleanse safely and with as little intestinal duress as possible. (When you go several days without eating and completely cleanse your gastrointestinal tract, throwing some food in there with no warning can be a really nasty shock.)
I cannot stress enough the importance of reading Mr. Burroughs book or, at the very least, the free PDF available for download on this cleanse. Please do not try this cleanse with just an overview blog as a guide!
On your first day coming off the cleanse, it is very important that you ease off gently. You are still on a liquid diet. Plan to drink several glasses of orange juice in addition to plenty of water. You may also drink herbal teas as much as you like. The orange juice will prepare your digestive system to begin receiving regular food but don’t be surprised if things start feeling funny if you chug a glass of straight orange juice. Since a glass of orange juice has a great deal of natural sugar and 120 calories, you may want to start the day with a glass of 50% water and 50% juice. Drink slowly and remember to continue to drink lots of water. You’ve come this far, so don’t rush it! Feel free to drink several glasses of orange juice and water throughout the day.
