There are a number of wonderful things to do this time of year in many communities. Numerous events are free or low cost and are family oriented. Along with treating your family to an enjoyable day or evening, these events offer a great way to entertain visiting guests.
Listen to community calendar announcements, check the paper, or call your area Chamber of Commerce or city hall for more information. Look for parades, parties, lighting ceremonies, Christmas concerts, and more.
Some businesses offer holiday events to show customer appreciation. Our local bank closes early one Friday during December and offers cookies, coffee, and cider while carols play in the background. Santa visits and kids can sit on his lap and have their picture taken. Promotional items are given as gifts to adults and children receive a gift-bag containing treats and toys.
Each surrounding town in this area hosts a Christmas parade as well. Ours was yesterday, and it was a sunny 50 something degree day instead of wintry weather (we have watched or been in these parades when it was bitter cold!). Local businesses set up tables along the street to pass out cocoa and cookies and at the end of the line, Santa was receiving children anxious to tell him what they want for Christmas. Treat-bags were given with several trinkets and toys, chocolates, and fruit. Pictures were taken with Santa.
Many stores also offer visits and photos with Santa, so check out your favorite retailers. You may also find that parents get a “gift” during such events, as some stores offer special sales or in store coupons while Santa is in attendance.
There are also office Christmas parties and similar events. A great idea is to plan ahead to trade babysitting with a nearby relative or friend for the day/evening of your holiday work party instead of hiring a sitter. This way, neither one of you has to search for or pay for a babysitter. It’s often difficult to find an available babysitter during the holiday season, and the money you save can be used on gifts and festivities or pocketed, helping you stay within your holiday budget.
