If you’ve read some of my blogs, you will notice that I am a big fan of taking workout classes at community colleges. While my spinning (indoor cycling) class comes to an end tomorrow, I was thinking about how I really enjoy taking classes at my community college.
Price
If an organized class is your thing, then your best options when on a budget are community and college classes. My local college was $50 for one class spring quarter. With quarter being twelve weeks and the class was twice a week, making each class just a few dollars. What is also nice about taking a class at a college, you can often take the class for no credit. Credit/no credit (also called pass/no pass) is often an option, basically giving you the choice to take the class without a grade.
Options
Most community colleges offer a variety of classes from sports such as volleyball and basketball to cardio classes such as step-aerobics, spinning, etc. If you have physical limitations or need to start off slow, some campuses offer yoga, stretching or tai-chi.
Another aspect I enjoy about community college physical education programs is the chance to make-up a class. Say you had to miss your Tuesday volleyball class, some instructors will let you make-up your missed class by attending another PE class. This gives you a chance to pick a class you may have thought about trying and then you can see if you like it.
Convenience
Find a community college that is near your home or work. The community college I go to is near where I run errands and close to family that I can visit after my class. Finding a community college that is on your way home from work or near your house will make it convenient for you to attend your class. If your nearest community college is not near your home or work, try taking a once a week class in the evening or a Saturday. Another idea if the college is a bit of a drive, try recruiting a friend to be your workout and carpool buddy.
If you don’t have a community college nearby with workout classes or a physical education program, there are still options for you. If you live in a rural area, some colleges will have a distance learning center set up for students to still participate in classes. Or try a local community center or church, they often have aerobic classes for a minimal fee.
