Concerns of Public Education: P = Parents

Yesterday, I discussed parents as being a perk to public education. Today, I would like to move to the opposite end of the spectrum. Parents can also be a concern for education.

Some parents actually cause more undesired behaviors than the children do. We have parents at our school, not from my room thankfully, that insist on not following the rules. The rule broken could basically be about anything. Some parents just feel that they are an exception to everything. Some parents will not follow the traffic flow and rules for dropping off and picking up their child. Other parents refuse to sign in through the office when they visit the school.

The attitude of the parent greatly affects the attitude of the child. Many negative children live in a home with negative parents. Children learn to be harsh and uncaring toward others from viewing their parents.

We have parents that fuss and feud over which child said this and that to their children. Many of the children are over the drama well before their parents. There are children that will not play together because their parents cannot get along. The parents say unkind things about the families of other child and this attitude reflects in the actions of their children.

Some parents are unsupportive about education and teachers. They do not stress the importance of education to their child. Some parents talk down about their child’s teacher in front of their child. This usually causes the child to lose respect for the teacher and discipline problems occur. The parent in turn does not support the teacher with the discipline issues.

In some cases, parents are more of a hindrance to a child’s attitude and behavior. Often, parents do not realize how closely their young children watch them. Children feel the need to imitate their parents’ actions and attitudes. It is very important for parents to do their best to set good values and be a good role model for their children.
