Consider Your Goals

The end of January is a great time to sit back and evaluate your goals. Are you making the progress that you wanted to or do you need to adjust? Here are five things to consider.

1) Was your goal realistic? It may be that you set your goal too high to accomplish all at once, and you might be able to achieve better by breaking it down into much smaller steps. You could space the steps out, but you will feel like you accomplishing more as you meet each of the smaller steps.

2) Do you have too many goals? It is best to limit your goals to two or three specific things. If you try to change your whole life all at once, you probably won’t change anything at all. Choose one spiritual goal, one family goal and one personal goal to focus on. Then stop worrying about everything else.

3) What is your biggest stumbling block to achieving your goal? My biggest stumbling block is getting up in the mornings early enough to accomplish any goal I plan to do in the mornings. In retrospect, it may be that I stay up too late. Your stumbling block may be shopping habits or an unsupportive family. It is important to recognize the stumbling block and see if you can adjust your goal or your situation to deal with it.

4) Have you prayed about your goal? I often find that when I repeatedly can’t accomplish something, that I should make it a matter of prayer. It is amazing at how quickly I solve the problem or realize I am heading in the wrong direction. Praying about the goal will help you to move forward.

5) Once you have adjusted your goal, you should keep working on it. You should also take time to evaluate your goal on a regular basis to make sure that you are still moving forward. Your situation may change, and you may need different goals. You should be continually working to move forward.
