Here is why you are the luckiest person in the world.
So many times in marriage, we look at our relationships and think about all of the little ways that we are unlucky. We compare our lives and our marriages with those of our friends or even those of people on television or in movies. “Wow,” we think. “Why couldn’t I have been lucky enough to find someone who makes more money, who has better ambition, who lets me sleep in on weekends or who doesn’t leave the seat up?”
We may talk about how lucky so-and-so is to have found a spouse that is handy around the house, a rocket scientist, can cook, doesn’t work late, offers romantic surprises, or who likes to clean.
Instead of focusing on the ways we are unlucky, why not focus on the little things and the big things that make you the luckiest person in the world. You are the only one married to your spouse. Many times we take those things for granted.
Make a list of all of the little things that makes you so lucky that your spouse chose you. Think back to when you were dating if you have to. On my list is the fact that since I have been married I have never once had to put gas in the car or worry about running out of it. These are the little things, the silly things, but I’m sure you get my point.
Now, think about the big things. One of them is the great odds that there must have been against ever meeting your spouse and then the even greater odds that you would even recognize each other as “the one.” If you are spiritual, you may believe that God or the universe had a hand at bringing you together. This takes away some of the randomness, but still there is so much that could have gone a different way. What if you decided to take a different job, or miss that party? What if you were late or early or busy on the day you met? What if you just weren’t listening?
There is a line from the movie When Harry Met Sally when one friend is trying to convince the other to date. The friend tells her that if she doesn’t take a chance then “You will have to go around your whole life knowing that someone else is married to your husband.” Imagine if someone else was married to your spouse instead. Now don’t you feel like the luckiest person in the world?
