There is a controversy in New York schools concerning a sex education curriculum that students will be introduced to. One of the resources that students in school will be directed to is a website called “Go Ask Alice.”
Of course, I invite you to check it out for yourself but I can tell you that it’s certainly not something I would provide my children with. If you click on the tab “Sexuality,” you get this red box that provides a snapshot of what you are about to link to. It reads: “Learn the A-B-Cs of S-E-X: abstinence, boners & clitorises.” Just right there you can see a potential problem.
Now here are some of the categories you will find underneath sexuality:
Genital wonderings (including the male hot spot)
Sexual questions (including how to get started on phone sex)
Kissing (including how to get rid of the bruising caused by a hickey)
Masturbation (including how to purchase a vibrator without parents knowing)
The categories continue on with topics ranging from S/M role-playing to what types of erotic videos can be found. I mean, I was in absolute shock at the type of information that is provided on this website. And this is a resource that New York schools will be pointing their students to? It is called “comprehensive” sex education.
Apparently abstinence-only education is becoming less popular. Not only do some believe that it’s ineffective but it has also been called “dangerous.” Some experts say that students who go through this course end up having sex just as much as those who don’t take an abstinence-only course. And they are less likely to use protection so they end up pregnant or with sexually transmitted diseases. Hmmm…where are their stats to back this up?
So let’s if I got this right…since teens are (according to them) going to have sex anyway, why not go beyond teaching them how to use birth control and let’s get down to the real nitty-gritty of dirty sex. Yeah, that’s exactly the kind of sex education I want my children exposed to. No wonder parents in New York are protesting.
What do you think about this?
