When you avoid expensive convenience items, you will save money. Here are some of the top convenience items that may be making you spend more than you have.
My husband came home the other day to tell me that one of his co-workers just came back from one of the local warehouse price clubs with more than $600 worth of cleaning supplies. She told him that since she doesn’t like to go out in the winter, she stocks up on cleaning supplies in the fall to carry her through the next six months.
Although I like to have a clean house, I can’t imagine spending $100 a month on cleaning supplies. For that much, I would just rather hire someone to clean. I’m guessing that this woman makes use of a lot of convenience items in her cleaning.
Some of these convenience cleaning items can get very expensive. Take a look at those cleaning wipes that come in a tub. Yes they are certainly convenient, but they cost a lot per wipe. There are other alternatives. If you really like the toss away wipes, you can make them yourself for less. Or simply use an inexpensive washcloth or rag with some cleaner on it. Rinse and hang the cloth to dry, and toss it into the wash later.
The cost of automatic mop supplies can add up as well, it takes an entire bottle of the stuff to do my kitchen floor, along with a disposable cloth or two. My floor isn’t that big, either. Instead, a standard bucket and mop work just as well for just a fraction of the cost.
The disposable toilet brushes drive me crazy as well. A standard reusable brush costs so much less. If you are squeamish about a “germy” brush, ask yourself how germy could it be immersed in bleach or the disinfecting solution you are using to clean the toilet anyway?
