Imagine being snowed in and not knowing what to cook? This great resource makes it easy to just whip something together from items in your pantry.
If you have been following my blog, you know that I have been trying to use up some of my food stockpile before I move. I have been doing this through a self-imposed pantry challenge, well, one of my good friends, Kelly, who has been reading my blogs has just alerted me to a great website that will make my life a lot easier, when it comes to pulling ingredients from my pantry.
The cooking by numbers website is devoted to pantry shopping. “Don’t bother going shopping, let’s cook with what you have,” it says. Just click on the cute, but slightly disturbing tomato face (ever see the movie, “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?”) and you are on your way to a great meal.
You are presented with two check off lists, one for what is in your pantry and one for what is in your fridge. Each list has 25 items in it. Hopefully, they will be able to expand the list to even more items. All of the basics are covered here, though.
Some of the sample recipes are pretty simple, such as fried egg. Others, while still simple, are meals I might not have thought about, such as baked beans on toast. You aren’t limited to just recipes for your chosen pantry items. There is a percentage system that will show you how many of the necessary items you have on hand for a recipe, presumably so you can run next door to the neighbor’s house for the missing ingredients, if you find a particularly appealing meal.
Some of the meals just don’t sound like they would be pleasing to my pallet, such as combining cabbage and apples, but they are definitely frugal. The noodles with garlic, bacon onion and mushroom sound pretty interesting, though.
Oh, and to reinforce the scary tomato theme, the website even has a tomato attack web game! Don’t you hate it when tomatoes grow teeth?
