Cooking vs Fixing

When I got married I cooked dinner for my husband almost every night. I subscribed to several different cooking magazines and couldn’t wait to try each recipe in every one of them. I bought cookbooks and drooled over the pictures and wanted to cook, cook, cook.

I am the youngest of four with five nephews and four nieces. Whenever my family would gather together for holidays and events, I would bake a beautiful and delicious cake. I loved baking cakes for the family and the compliments my cakes would receive.

Our first house was ideal for cooking and baking. The kitchen was open to the entire downstairs. I could see everything from the kitchen. I wouldn’t miss anything on TV or spending time with my darling husband. The kitchen was small, but it was great.

The kitchen in our second house was behind a wall. I couldn’t see the TV or talk to anyone who was in the house unless he was sitting at the dining room table just outside the kitchen. I started to not want to cook very much. We also had a very sensitive smoke alarm that went off almost any time we turned on the oven. We were able to replace the smoke alarm with one made specifically for kitchens, but I couldn’t get my cooking love back as easily.

Houses we’ve owned since have had more open kitchens because I will not be separated again. I am still not much of a cooker. I’m a fixer. I love to fix dinner. Fixing is so fast and easy. I fix something for the girls, give them a bath, and put them to bed. Then I fix something for my husband and myself.

I know cooking would ultimately be cheaper and healthier. Maybe I’ll want to in our next house.
