Cool Places to Visit in 2012

There’s one thing I learned very quickly working in TV news in Wisconsin during the winter months: Never do a happy dance on-air when the meteorologist says there’s no snow in sight for the foreseeable future.

For someone born and raised in Hawaii, that’s great news.

For skiers, snowboarders and business owners, who rely on the white stuff, not so much.

So, anyway, I learned quick to keep my lip zipped and refrain from busting a move when I would hear that there was no snow in the forecast.

I saved my happy dance for the commercial breaks.

I suppose I should not be surprised that there are quite a few snow lovers out there. If you are one of them, you might be interested in spending part of the New Year soaking up the frosty surroundings at the following winter wonderlands:

MICHIGAN

You won’t have a problem finding incredible ski resorts in Michigan. Even if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, they’ve got machines that can crank out blizzard-like conditions. If you are looking for added fun during your ski vacation, then head over to Slush Cup Weekend at Schuss Mountain from March 2-4, 2012. Located in Bellaire, Michigan, the annual event is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a slew of ski and snowboard races. But, these are no ordinary competitions. During Slush Cup Weekend, skiers and snowboarder race across a 40-foot pond while sporting wild and wacky costumes. In addition, you can watch the snow shovel race or get into the action by donning a garbage bag and riding belly-down in the seal sled race.

CANADA

If you thrive in the bitter cold, then you won’t want to miss the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous held in Yukon, Canada, February 23 to 26, 2012. The festival pays tribute to Yukon’s Klondike Gold Rush days, which took place in the 1900s, when temperatures would dip down to -40 degrees. Highlights of the annual event include a beard-growing contest for men and a hairy-leg competition for women. There’s also an axe-throwing contest, the chainsaw chuck, the Swede saw, the log toss, and the flour-packing contest.
