Cool Ways to Decorate Easter Eggs, Part II

Here is another idea for making beautiful, colorful Easter eggs. You can apply this idea to plastic eggs as well, and keep them to use again next year when you decorate for Easter!

Mosaic Easter Eggs

Items Needed:

  • Hardboiled eggs (the number of eggs is up to you)
  • Tissue paper (different colors)
  • Decoupage (or two parts white glue and one part water mixture)
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Tweezers (optional)
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • Watercolor paints (optional)

1. Boil the eggs and allow them to cool to at least room temperature. Place eggs on towels or paper towels to absorb condensation, as dry eggs are easier to decorate.

2. Next, begin cutting different colored pieces of tissue paper into tiny shapes, cutting over a box, bowl or other type of container to keep track of the little pieces. Squares are simple to cut and work just fine, or you can use a hole punch for circles.

3. Apply a thin coat of decoupage (or glue and water mixture) to part of one egg with the paintbrush. It is best to decorate one part of the egg at a time, so it will not stick to other items as you are working with it.
Apply bits of tissue paper to the sticky area of the egg (you may want to use tweezers for this step).

4. It’s okay to overlap pieces, as it intensifies the colors of the tissue paper. You may need to brush on a bit more decoupage for overlapping pieces.

5. You can use multiple colors or try making a few eggs using all the same color tissue paper for a different effect. If you overlap, you will get light and dark tones of the same color, which is also pretty.

6. For another different effect, paint the eggs with watercolor paints to create a background color behind your mosaic pattern. Be sure to allow the eggs to dry thoroughly before attempting to add tissue paper.
