Coordinated Craft: Decorated Tins

You and your kids can make cute, coordinated containers for their room or any space in the home. This is a great way to continue a theme in a bedroom or playroom to add a few more touches of the theme throughout the space.

If you have leftover fabric, that will work great, but you can also use wrapping paper, posters, and other paper products that contain images that go with your theme. Whether it’s a trademark character, or a favorite animal, you can use several different materials to decorate your containers, and they will make great storage for crayons, small toys, hair accessories, or anything you like.

Items needed:

  • Tins with lids (cookie tins are great)
  • Fabric or printed paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Water
  • Disposable containers (margarine tub works well)
  • Paintbrush

Getting Started:

First, make sure the tin is clean, inside and outside. Also, make sure it’s good and dry.

If fabric is wrinkled, press it smooth. Some paper products can also be pressed with a cool iron. Adults should use the iron.

Mix some glue and water in the disposable container. You want the glue to be thinned down a little, but not watery.

Putting it Together:

coordinated craftsYou can use a large piece of fabric or paper for continuous coverage or you can cut small pieces out and cover your tin in a collage fashion.

For continuous coverage, trace the lid on the material and cut it out. Then, cut a strip to wrap around the edge of the lid, and a wider strip to wrap around the body of the tin.

You can dip the material or “paint” both the fabric and the tin with the glue mixture to adhere the material to the container.

Do the inside too, if you like, or you can cover the inside with felt or leave it as is.

Another idea is to paint the tin and when it’s dry, add just a few images randomly or in a pattern. Do the same with the lid or paint your name on it.

*This is a good way to decorate other containers or a wastebasket to coordinate with your bedroom or playroom too!
