Stress has been the code-word of the past couple decades. We are constantly warned to “cope with stress” and “not get too stressed out.” With all the joys and freedoms of being an entrepreneur and running one’s own home business–there are definitely some pretty intense and constant stresses that characterize this type of work too. For many of us, coping with the stress of running a business from home and caring for our families, can get challenging and overwhelming.
Just the sheer volume of tasks and responsibilities we may have to accomplish when we start a home business can take some getting used to. That “to-do” list may look long enough–but then add to your day all the realities of trying to check off those items while dealing with the unpredictability of home life and it can feel like a lot of things are being left undone. Having a realistic expectations of what we are capable of and what is reasonable to expect can help, as can allowing some flexibility for the unpredictable realities of working from home.
Making sure that we get some down time, mix up our schedules, and get out for exercise and a change of pace, are additional important ways to cope and combat the stressors of running a home-based business. Also, since we may spend so much time alone or isolated as we work away (or with only children for company)–making sure that we maintain contact with colleagues, get some professional and adult stimulation, and balance out our schedules to include other activities and human contact will go a very long way in helping to alleviate the stress of entrepreneurship.
Try to remember that everything is temporary and evolving. When things start to feel too stressful, take a break, cut back on caffeinated beverages, get out for a walk or swim or go out to lunch with a friend. Just getting a change of pace will give you new perspective and help you to de-stress.
