This is one of the simplest costume ideas you will find. There are two options to choose from, depending on what the weather is like for Halloween this year.
Standard Little Red Riding Hood
Put a red dress, red top and skirt, or red shirt and pants on your little girl. You will also need about one yard of red fabric and some red ribbon. Cut a strip about 12” wide from the short side of the fabric. Fold it so it makes a square and cut off any excess. Holding the fold at the top, sew or glue (with fabric glue) or use iron on fusible seam tape, to secure one side. That will be the back of the hood. Sew a piece of ribbon to each open bottom corner to tie the hood (fold over first as necessary to fit your child’s head, although it should fit loosely). Use the rest of the fabric as a cape. Fold it in half and cut from the bottom corner upward at an angle, cutting off the top corner, but not creating a point. Open it up and it will be narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. Attach ribbons to the corners at the top to tie the cape on. Hem or add lace trim if desired. Give your little girl a basket lined with a towel or fabric. She can use “Grandma’s goody basket” in place of a trick or treat bag.
Warm Little Red Riding Hood Costume
Put red pants, a red skirt with tights or leggings, and any shirt on your little girl. Then, put on a red hooded sweatshirt, zipped up, with the hood on. Follow the directions above for the cape piece and tie it on over her sweatshirt. Grab a basket and go get some candy!
