I imagine I’m being rather myopic, but I just assume that everyone uses a computer now in whatever work they do. Of course, that can’t be true. Someone told me recently about a financial business here in town where they are still doing all the the books and files and paperwork by hand–there isn’t a computer in the office. I immediately pictured this anachronistic office with wood paneling and orange chairs. Certainly, that’s my bias and while I can’t even imagine working without spreadsheets and internet access–it must be possible, probable and fairly common.
It wasn’t so long ago (and I’m not too young not to remember it) when the typical office was not desk after desk of individuals facing a computer screen all day. I do remember typewriters, carbon paper and word processors. I remember actually doing business over the telephone (instead of via e-mail) and I remember the old FAX machines (facsimile then) with the roles of funny-feeling paper. I also remember having a computer but no e-mail or internet access (a glorified word processor, really). There was definitely a time when I didn’t imagine working every day WITH a computer. Now, I can’t envision working without. And, I know my kids can’t imagine a world without computers. Although they can remember slower and more “antiquated” versions of computers from days past, they certainly assume that the desktop computer is a necessity and an inalienable right (we have frequent discussions about the differences between “needs” and “wants” and “rights” and “privileges.”)
I would love to hear from individuals who are operating a home business and NOT using a computer. I suppose a day care provider or a landscape artist might be able to get by without one, provided you do your bookkeeping and keep track of customers on paper–but I’d like to hear how you all feel…Could you work without a computer? Do you work without a computer as part of your business operations?
