Well, if you believe what the international media is screaming with banner headlines then in less than 36 hours Tom Cruise and his fiancée Katie Holmes will finally become man and wife. For weeks, rumors have been swirling that TomKat would likely wed Saturday in a Scientology ceremony held at a 15th-century Italian castle in the lakeside town of Bracciano, near Rome. Today, the same day that A-list Hollywood stars and supposed wedding guests arrived via charted plane to join the couple in Rome, Bracciano’s mayor spoke to the swarms of reporters that have descended on the small town.
The mayor told news reporters she had met with Cruise and Holmes yesterday, but she would not say where. She was also reportedly coy about other details, too, saying only that she expected the couple to arrive Saturday morning at the castle for what she believed would be a wedding ceremony, followed by a banquet.
Cruise and Holmes have been spent the past few days at a luxury hotel near the Spanish Steps in Rome. The same hotel, which is hosting the Hollywood celebrity revelers that arrived in Rome today for the “wedding of the century.” According to media reports, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Brooke Shields, Leah Remini, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy– all arrived at Rome’s Ciampino Airport today for the TomKat nuptials. Following that pack of stars were a few more wedding guests including Cruise’s “Jerry Maguire” director Cameron Crowe, Cruise’s producing partner Paula Wagner, and Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible 3” director J.J. Abrams.
What I found interesting about this list was that besides the report that her parent’s had also made it to Rome today, Holmes’ contributions to the wedding guest list seem very slim. Where are her former “Dawson’s Creek” cast mates? And, how is it that former Cruise nemesis Brooke Shields scores an invite while Oprah is left to hang with Stedman in Chicago?
I must admit I am looking forward to seeing what Katie’s wedding dress will look like, but I’m not holding my breath thinking that the couple will pose for pictures on the Spanish Steps so the media can beam me back a perfect shot—I suppose I will have to be happy with whatever the paparazzi’s telephoto lenses are able to capture.
