How are you preparing for the holidays? During the last post I talked about getting the house back into somewhat normal order after a couple of weeks of heavy workloads and church commitments. Well, I am happy to report that we are mostly there.
My next order of business in my home is to eliminate the clutter and the excess. This will not only make it easier to keep everything clean, but it will leave room for the holiday decorating. The decorations will have a place to go, especially the Christmas tree, and the house won’t look overwhelmed. It will be easier to cook and invite others over to celebrate the season. I’m having a donation day.
One big aspect of the de-clutter has to do with the children’s toys and playthings. It is hard to imagine more toys under the tree when the current ones are already bursting at the seams for our storage space.
Eliminating toys is one of my biggest challenges. The kids don’t want to let things go and will suddenly start playing with something if it I ask about getting rid of it. This is coupled with the fact that I, myself place some sentimental value on certain toys that we really enjoyed together. Still, if there is going to be room for new things to be stored after the holidays, then some old things will have to go.
We did manage to fill one box with toys for the church nursery, and I am happy to report that the box was delivered today. We also have an even larger box ready for the local Goodwill or Purple Heart, and we’ve started another bag.
Kids playthings aren’t the only things that can build up over a year and need a de-clutter. I have to say that I found a few items in my own closet that can go. When you can step out of a pair of pants without unfastening them first, then they really have no business being in the closet. The same goes for items that might fit but are never worn. I have a friend in mind for these.
Early November is a great time to do a donation day. It is a good transition into the holidays without feeling as though you are rushing things.
