Growing up my Dad’s favorite recipe was Country-Fried Steak. He loved to eat it topped with creamy gravy, mashed potatoes and corn on the side. Over the years I have refined the recipe and added what I feel is a perfect combination of flavors to this easy to prepare meal. Country-Fried Steak is comfort food at it’s finest. Serve with some home made macaroni and cheese or yummy vegetables on the side as well for an equally satisfying meal. This is a meal your family will all jump on board with and you’ll enjoy the simplicity of the preparation as well as good taste!
You Will Need:
• 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour,
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 3/4 teaspoon each salt, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder and pepper
• 2 eggs, lightly beaten
• 1-2/3 cups buttermilk
• 4 beef cube steaks (1 pound)
• Oil for frying
• 1-1/2 cups milk
To Prepare this Recipe:
In a shallow bowl, combine 2 cups flour, baking powder and seasonings. In another bowl, combine eggs and 1 cup buttermilk. Dip each cube steak in buttermilk mixture, then coat with flour mixture. Let stand for 5 minutes. Note if you do not have buttermilk regular milk will work but will not result in the same textured coating.
In a skillet, heat half an inch of oil on medium-high. Fry steaks for 5-7 minutes. Turn carefully; cook 5 minutes longer or until coating is crisp and meat is no longer pink. Remove steaks and keep warm. Be careful about covering the steaks to keep warm. Covering fried food can sometimes result in the softening of the crunchy coating.
To make the gravy, simply drain drippings from the meat, reserving 1/3 cup drippings; stir remaining flour into drippings until smooth. Cook and stir over medium heat for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk and remaining buttermilk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve with steaks.
