First seen as a Disney Original Movie, “Cow Belles” features sister act sensation Alyson and Amanda Michalka, also known as Aly and AJ. Portraying Taylor and Courtney Callum, two spoiled rich girls who spend their daddy’s money like water, these girls make a splash in their acting debut.
Courtney is getting ready for her cotillion, a coming-out party to end all parties. She and several friends are splitting the costs to make it a night to remember, and each share is a whopping $25,000. It’s not a big deal, though – her father owns a dairy company and is loaded.
Taylor, meanwhile, has passes her driver’s license exam and her reward: the car her deceased mother used to drive, all fixed up and ready to go. She doesn’t know how to drive a stick shift, but her father has arranged for Jackson, the son of one of his clients, to teach her. The first lesson does not go well – she drives his truck into a pond.
Mr. Callum doesn’t know what to do with these girls. He’s done the best he can since their mother died, but he realizes that he hasn’t taught them much about responsibility. And when they accidentally set fire to the kitchen, he knows he has to wake them up to the real world, and fast. The best way? Make them join the work force.
They report for work bright and early the next day, but their father is not there. His business manager has just surprised him with a trip to an exotic locale to photograph a rare butterfly, Mr. Callum’s life dream. With their father out of the way for a week, the girls think their lives will be easy, but that’s before they actually put in a hard day’s work. And then – the unthinkable happens. All the money in the company’s bank account has been stripped out, and Mr. Callum is blamed for taking it and leaving town.
Taylor and Courtney have to hold down the fort until their father gets back, but they need cash, and fast. But where will they get that kind of money? The budget for the cotillion, of course, but this causes a huge fight between the two sisters.
I wasn’t sure I was going to like this movie, but I found myself pleasantly surprised. These girls were spoiled, but they were good at heart and they just needed a chance to prove themselves. My daughter enjoyed it as well, so I think the producers hit their target audience right on. If you’re looking for a film with girl power, shopping, a little bit of sweet romance and a happy ending, give “Cow Belles” a try.
