Craft: Burlap Fabric Purse or Wallet

Here is a fun activity for summer that is reminiscent of camp!

Burlap Fabric Purse or Wallet

Supplies:

Burlap fabric. 8×10 is enough to make a small purse. Cut down to make a wallet.

Yarn

Craft needle (plastic for younger children)

Buttons, felt letters, or other adornments that can be hot glued or sewn on easily.

Scissors

Fabric glue or hot glue

Directions:

1.From the bottom fold the fabric up leaving a few inches at the top, and then fold the top portion down over the fabric to create the look of a purse. Once you are certain this is how you want your purse or wallet to look you can begin sewing the sides.

2.You may sew your sides inside out so no seams will show or sew on the outside showing the seams. While you can sew buttons on the sides to keep the seams closed this may not be easy for little hands as they would have to hold the fabric closed while sewing a button.

3.Once you sew the sides you can add buttons to the sides to decorate or leave as is.

4.Sew buttons where the top folded area of the fabric hits the bottom or where you open and close the purse. The buttons will assist in keeping the purse closed and for decorative purposes.

5.To keep your purse closed you can cut a slit in your fabric (edge where it touches the top folded part) large enough for the button to go through. You may want to reinforce this opening by sewing yarn around the area or just at either side of the slit. Another way is to thread yarn, small rope, stretchy jewelry string or the alike in a hoop which would loop onto the button to keep the purse closed. The hoop would have to be reinforced from the backside of the fabric on the inner part of the purse.

6.You may use fabric glue or hot glue to attach felt letters to the front with your name.
