This idea works great for an everyday cookie jar or special ones for holidays. You can make them for home, or for use when giving away home baked holiday cookies.
Items Needed:
- Large plastic coffee can with lid (Folgers cans work great)
- Craft foam or sheets of thin Styrofoam
- Craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Glue
- Clip art or other images
- Stencils or letter decals
- Ribbon (optional)
How to:
Start by making sure the coffee can is clean and dry. The plastic ones are great because they won’t rust inside or change the taste of the cookies. They’re airtight, so your cookies will stay fresher longer.
Paint the can, the lid, or both, if desired. Allow to dry completely.
Cut circles from craft foam or Styrofoam and glue them to the area that you want to be the front of the cookie jar. Choose the appropriate color foam or paint the Styrofoam to match the images you cut out. Make sure paint is dry.
Glue images of cookies or other baked goods to the foam. It works best if you cut the foam just a little smaller than the image and wrap the picture around the edges of the foam. If using craft foam, choose a thick piece, or use two layers of foam.
Add smaller cookies randomly around the larger ones. Glue on pictures of candies and other treats if desired, or add stars, hearts, or holiday decorations. One example is making foam cutouts of candy canes and painting them or adding images on top.
*Gluing on toy cookies that look real is another great way to get that 3-D effect.
Tie the ribbon in a bow and glue it to the center of the lid for holiday gift giving (optional).
Stencil on the word cookies or treats or add any words you like. You can use stick on letters in place of stencils if desired.
Now, all that’s left to do is fill your new cookie jar with cookies!
