Create an Extra Surface out of Thin Air

If you could use some extra surface space, such as a place to set your laptop, a desk for kids to study, a serving table, or a few more feet of counter space, this project is for you. If you can attach some hinges to the wall and to a piece of wood, or have someone attach them for you, you can add a work surface to any room in your home and have it in place before tomorrow.

You can make your work surface any size you want, but for this project, we’ll go with a 20″ x 30″ workspace. Cut a 3/8″ thick piece of plywood, MDF, or Plexiglas down to 20″ x30″ or have it cut down at your local home improvement or building supply center (most will cut it for you for just a few cents more).

Sand and paint your wood if desired. When dry, measure and mark the spaces for the hinges, about 18” apart. Attach the hinges, making sure they move in the appropriate direction. Decide how high you want your work surface to be from the floor, measure and mark the height. Measure about 18″ from that mark and make another mark then lightly draw a straight line. Drill small pilot holes for the screws and then attach the hinges to the wall. Add a hook and eye to keep the “table” in place when in the upright position.

This is a fairly simple yet very functional idea that is not only handy and portable, but it is also a great space saving option that provides you with an extra surface when needed, that simply “disappears” when not in use. On the other hand, you can also paint the exterior so the piece can also serve as simple artwork when not being used as a work surface.

This idea works great in kid’s rooms, playrooms, laundry rooms, and is also handy in the shed, garage, or even outdoors on an exterior wall.
