Some people find housekeeping therapeutic and others would like to avoid it at any cost. I tend to be one of those that equate it to therapy because I feel so much better when things are cleaned up and put away. But what has really helped is my daily chore list.
I know that some people like to do their chores whenever they get to them, or an entire evening may be set aside. Some people take advantage of the weekend and use that as a time to catch up. Personally, I don’t like to spend hours of my time cleaning the house and I don’t like to waste my weekend on that, so I find a daily chore list to be beneficial.
For the next few blogs I am going to share ways that will help keep your home uncluttered and clean. I am starting off this “blog series” with a daily chore list and will then move to a weekly, monthly, yearly and seasonal chore list.
I would suggest getting a binder and using that to keep track of your chore lists. It will help you to stay on top of things. It can also be passed onto another family member should you become sick or unavailable for whatever reason…they will have access to everything that needs to be done and when.
Now remember, a daily chore list is for those things that you do only on a daily basis. This list shouldn’t include things like dusting (unless you really do dust every single day). Instead it should include things like dishes, sweeping, vacuuming or whatever else that you or a family member does on a daily basis.
Start off your list by writing down all the things that need to be done daily. No matter who is responsible for those chores, write them all down. Once you have that list, you can begin to delegate the chores. Break it down into who is responsible for which chores.
If you have been taking on all of the daily chores, it really is time to make this a family affair. No one person should be responsible for the entire house. It has been such a burden lifter to give some of those daily chores to my children.
They are responsible for things such as feeding the pets, unloading and loading the dishwasher, and wiping down the bathroom. And of course, I have my own daily chores that I am responsible for.
If you haven’t started your daily chore list, start one today. But don’t forget to put it inside a binder. That binder will eventually hold lots of other items that will make running your household smoother.
