Every time I watch one of my favorite movies, I’m drawn into the animation. It’s the beauty of the fields that gets me. Even though they’re animated, a lush field of blooming flowers backed by mountains seems like the perfect place for me to drift off for a nap.
Of course, I can’t travel into the movie, although it would be nice. However, if I ever had a mural on my wall, it would be of a field of lushly-blooming flowers. So restful!
When my daughter was one, I painted a mural on her wall.
Use a slide projector or powerpoint projector to project an image onto the wall. Trace it in pencil, and then paint by numbers! You can also copy pictures of landscape elements that you like, put them on paper, and trace them onto the wall.
If you’re feeling really brave, get the kids to design part of the mural and paint it themselves. It is only paint, after all! If the kids are painting, make sure that you use low-VOC or no-VOC paints and wear painting clothes. Now, my daughter was only one, so she “painted” with a brush covered in water.
You can also get stick on “murals” for your wall. These come packaged in themes, or you can get them custom designed on Etsy. If you’d like the look of a mural but you don’t like the permanent qualities of paint, one of these mural options might be for you.
What sorts of murals intrigue me these days?
How about a trompe d’oeil mural that makes it look like a room opens up into a garden or another room? A child’s room could open up into a spaceship or another fantasy world.
How about a mural on the floor? Paint a concrete floor so it looks like you have a marble floor, tiles, a mosaic, or weathered, mossy boards.
How about a mural inspired by your child’s early art works? Or your childhood photos?
Would you go for a mural as your headboard? You could have the fanciest headboard you’d like!
One of my favorite very silly murals is one behind a claw-footed tub. It’s a mural of octopus tentacles.
Would you put a mural on your wall? What kind of mural would you choose?
