Creating a “Virtual Lifebook”

Abundance. Copyright William H. Hall III

I just read Lisa’s email about linking to other blogs and such, and I normally try to link to other blogs, or sites that contain information about what I happen to be talking about. But enough of that, let’s get on with the subject at hand, photography.

As you may or may not know, my wife and I are adopting an 11 year-old girl. Our finalization is May 24th, and I had a great idea not too long ago about using my Photoshop Elements program to create some photos that include of all of us, including Jessica, at different times in our lives.

Let me explain this better. Jessica’s biological Mom made a photo book for her prior to her parental rights being terminated. So, we have an advantage over some other adoptive families, in that we actually have pictures of our daughter when she was younger. My idea is to take the pictures of her, and paste her into some photos of my wife and I in various locations and activities.

That way, we can have some “family” photos that we can share with others, and give Jessica more of a sense of belonging to our family. If any of you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. I don’t want to take away from her real family history, but I thought it would be a neat thing to try.

As I go along, I will take you step by step as to what I am doing, so you can follow along, and maybe offer some suggestions. This is something I haven’t tried yet, so I’m not the expert here. But, it does have some implications for those of you that are foster parents or other adoptive parents, and may be a way to create some interesting life books. And maybe some interesting scrapbooking or kids’ crafts ideas.

Basically, I will start with scanning in photos of Jessica when she was little, and then scan photos of us. Then I will attempt to copy just her out of an original photo and paste her into one of my wife and I. So, off we go into the wild blue yonder, to explore together the possibilities that await us…
