Creating Custom Curtains from Store Bought

Everyone wants that custom curtain look, but the cost of custom curtains can be quite prohibitive. But what do you do when your home has windows that don’t fit store bought curtains? Well, you need to do a bit of adustment.

Many new homes for example, boast soaring ceilings, but standard curtian sizes have not caught up to the new lenghts. In cases, you can avoid the high cost of customization by adding more length to the curtian.

I like to take the curtain panel to the fabric store and peruse the designer fabric for something that coordinates with it. Because the store bougt curtains are usually no more than a foot or two short, I can splurge on high end fabrics as I will only need a yard or two to make the curtains the right length.

Adding a peice of designer fabric to the top or bottom of your store bought curtain to get them to the right length is very attractive, but for a truly custom look, you will also want to add a bit of trim between the store bought curtain and accent fabric. People will swear that you paid hundreds for your custom curtain panels when you only spent the cost of a store bought curtain and another $20 or $30 for the whole set.

You can do this with just about any store bought curtain you find. When choosing a fabric to pair with your curtain to lenghten it, make sure that it is not too heavy that it pulls away from the original curtian. Make sure the colors coordinate well, but don’t worry about getting an exact match, it is nearly impossible to do. Remember putting trim in between the curtain and the fabric helps to maek the two fabrics coordinate better anyway.

You don’t have to add your additional fabric to the bottom of the cutain panel. you can also add it to the top. If my original curtain fabric is sheer and lighter than my accent fabric, I put the accent fabric on top. If the accent fabric is lighter, I put it on the bottom.
