It is important to create a sense of peace in the home. Your home should be a sanctuary to which everyone wants to come and stay. Having peace in the home will also influence the success and happiness for all of the members of the family. If everyone is happy at home, they can go out into the world from a good balanced place.
Here are some thoughts on creating that sense of peace.
It is hard to have a sense of peace in the home where chaos rules. That is why a home should be somewhat tidy. Notice I said somewhat tidy not showroom clean. Everyone has a different understanding of what is comfortable. That said, tripping over toys while on the way to the bathroom, being confronted by a sink full of stinky dishes when you get up in the morning, or stepping on something sticky as soon as you get in the door can raise stress levels. Make an effort to avoid cluttered chaos.
Even laid back types can have some structure and routine. We are definitely more of a creative see what happens family most of the time, but we do have to incorporate structure and routine into our family in order to keep a sense of peace. Knowing what is expected and when it is expected can calm everyone–as anyone who has had to deal with a cranky child past bedtime can attest. Having regular meals, is one easy way to start with some structure and routine.
Respect and calm in the home is another important way of creating a sense of peace. Avoid yelling and other forms of negative communication as much as possible. Yes, sometimes it can be hard, but if the members of the family are dreading coming home, negative attitudes may be part of the problem. Teach even the youngest members to be kind and loving to each other even when getting on each others nerves (hey, I didn’t say it would always be easy, but it will be worth the effort).
