Do you ever get bored with your holiday decorations? We tend to collect items over the years and we hang on to them, using them over and over. That’s all well and good, but sometimes, they just start to feel tired and boring. We buy new stuff, but we still have all this other stuff around.
One good way to use those items you still like but are beginning to tire of is to use them in different ways. A crystal sleigh that normally adorns your bookshelf or mantel filled with shiny ornaments might just make a great candy dish on your coffee table when filled with rich chocolates.
You can also use certain decorations with other items or place them in different spaces to jazz things up a bit. Create new groupings or vignettes, add a few new things, leave out a few old things but use some of them, and just spice it up a little.
Another option is to create themes throughout the house. I’m normally not a big theme person, but sometimes it works. For example, if you have several sleighs or snowmen use them all in the same room. If you have lots of little knick-knacks with a holly design, use them in one space.
This is a good method if you’ve already finished decorating but are not quite happy with the look and feel. If you find yourself continuously moving stuff around because it just doesn’t feel right or the design feels tired, creating themes might just freshen up the look.
Group colors together as well. Instead of mixing colors throughout the house, try a green room and a red room. Monochromatic designs can be very attractive, although your spaces don’t have to be completely one color. If you don’t really care for monochromatic styles, start with one main color and add just a few accents of another.
Mix it up. You might just be surprised how fresh even your oldest decorations can look.
