I’m always on the lookout for original and easy projects to decorate children’s rooms. Creative Ideas for Kid’s Rooms by Sieta Lambrias has ideas for children of all ages. Most of the projects can be completing within a day.
Step by step instructions are provided for more than twenty-five project. The instructions include full color photographs of the process and finished project. What I like best about this book is the “Try This” section that follows each project. This section includes ideas for adapting the project for other applications, or ways to take the original idea even further.
The projects are divided into Work and Play, Rest and Relax, Storage and Lighting, and Quick Fixes and Finishing Touches. Each project is rated for difficulty and a time estimate is provided. The projects are also categorized as being for boys or girls, or both. I found that a bit sexist. Many girls would also enjoy a moon and stars blind, or the soccer bulletin board. Boys would also enjoy the domino toy boxes. I do like that the projects are also categorized as “helping hand” or “not suitable for a helping hand”. I like that the author is including the children whenever possible. Reproducible templates and stencil patterns are provided.
Many of the projects are ideas I haven’t’ seen before. I love the flower shaped fold down table, and the nursery wall decorations made from paper. Other projects include a rocket shaped pajama case, a sunflower and bluebird crib mobile, and a bed canopy. One of my favorites is a felt height chart that has spaces for pictures that the child can draw, or you can put in the child’s photos as they grow taller. Another favorite is the idea of sewing large pockets onto a comforter. The pockets can store favorite stuffed animals, dolls or a bedtime book.
There’s even a sunflower nightlight made from felt. The middle of the flower is one of those push to turn on closet lights.
This book is a British publication. It’s fun to see soccer called football, pajamas called pyjamas, and cribs called cots.
