What do you do with an abundance of organic apples? Turn them into sweet apple butter.
It is finally the season for the wonderful smell of cooking apples and spices in the crockpot. This recipe will make your whole house smell so incredible and bring the good things of the fall season rushing into your home.
The recipe will make a good amount of apple butter. I was able to fill four large canning jars plus another large glass dish of it. Because of the amount made, you can store it for use throughout the fall and winter or be generous and share it with others.
I enjoyed the experience of this recipe so much that I am planning to make another batch this week. it is a great way to use up an excess of apples.
Ingredients:
14 tart apples, medium sized – peeled, cored and chopped. I use an apple slicer to core and cut the apples into eight pieces each. This made the prep work go quickly.
3 cups white sugar
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
A pinch of salt
Directions:
Place all of the ingredients into the slow cooker and mix.
Cook on low for 10-12 hours until apples break down and caramelize. You may stir once or twice while cooking. When cool, you can process it in the food processor to make it very smooth. I prefer the original texture.
Refrigerate or store in freezer. You can also can the apple butter to enjoy later.
The apple butter is on the sweeter side and can be served many ways. Try it on toast, biscuits, corn muffins, ice cream or yogurt. I use it to make peanut butter and jelly (well, peanut butter and apple butter) sandwiches for a quick lunch for the kids.
