Cruising Chicago and the Caribbean

If you are looking to take to the seas on a Caribbean cruise booking early will allow you to save a ton of money in the long run.

Right now Orbitz is offering a great deal on an eight-night Caribbean odyssey from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas for $3,298. (That’s a discount of 40 percent.) The price might sound steep but the ultra-luxe Seabourn Legend is an all-suite ship and your journey will include stops in Grand Turk Island; St. John on U.S. Virgin Islands; Gustavia on St. Barths; Marigot on Saint Martin; Virgin Gorda; and Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. The catch: the trip doesn’t sail until February 2009, but you must book now to get the discounted rate.

Vacation Outlet is also offering fabulous specials on seven-night Southern Caribbean sailings that depart on November 30 and December 14, 2008 and January 11, 2009. The weeklong voyages are currently priced at $1,799 for an oceanview stateroom. (The same room on other departures will cost you a hefty $2,249.) The ship will journey roundtrip from Bridgetown, Barbados, making stops at several exotic islands including Tobago, Grenada, Grenadines, and Dominica.

Closer to home tickets just went on sale for Chicago’s architecture cruise, which starts running again for the season beginning May 3rd.

The 90-minute guided tour takes place on 1920-style yachts and gives riders incredible views of 53 historic and architecturally significant sites around the Windy City, including the Trump Tower, Merchandise Mart, the Wrigley Building, the Tribune Tower, and the Sears Tower. The cruise also glides by significant buildings, sites and developments along the North Branch of the Chicago River such as The Montgomery, formerly the world headquarters for Montgomery Ward; the Chicago Tribune printing press plant; Goose Island; Kinzie Park development; Riverbend and the clustered glass River Cottages.

The cruises depart from the lower level and southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive, just north of Millennium Park. Tickets are $28 a person for weekday departures and $30 for weekends and holidays. They can be bought at the dock, the Chicago Architecture Foundation shop on Michigan Avenue or through ticketmaster.
