I haven’t really been a curb shopper lately. Years ago, I used to go out with a clever friend who was really into curb shopping. It was very deliberate. But just yesterday, my family and I rediscovered curb shopping, in a sense, as a sort of little family mission. Let me explain.
Have you heard about that family who decided to go on a hunt for loose change out in the world and then donate whatever they find to charity? They posted a website and listed how much money they found. I tried to find this website, but I cannot, so perhaps it has been taken down now. Anyway, the premise was that as a family, they would go hunting for lost money on the ground, in coin machines, etc.
Sunday, I was at church after service when I spotted a young newly pregnant couple. Suddenly, I felt like I should donate our crib. This is the crib that I have been reluctant to part with, since that would really make the statement that babyhood is far behind us. Not overly sentimental about things, I really have a soft spot of this crib and still wanted to hold on to it. But the urge to donate it was strong, so I approached the pastor, who introduced us to the woman, and the crib now has a new home (I probably should have consulted with my husband first, but fortunately, he was fine with it all).
Later that day, we happened to be heading out for an errand, when we spotted a toddler bed by the side of the road (there aren’t really any curbs here). It was being discarded. We were in a bit of a rush, but both my husband and I immediately thought we should grab it and subsequently find it a new home. Those toddler beds aren’t cheap, and we know of a few young families in need. The bed was in great shape, and instead of laying in a landfill, it can bless someone else.
So now we are on a new mission, to bless others with any nice curb shopping finds. We won’t be so deliberate with it, but if the Lord puts something in our path, we will do our best to match an item with someone in need.
