Butterflies are fascinating. Kids love to chase them, catch them, and study them. Your kids can “capture” their own with this idea and they will be delighted by these cute creature crafts.
Wooden Clothespin Butterfly
Items Needed:
- Wooden clothespin (not the spring loaded type)
- Coffee filter
- Twist tie
- Pipe Cleaner
- Marker
Directions:
Pinch the coffee filter together at the center and then secure it with the twist tie. Fluff up both sides to make “wings.” Wrap the pipe cleaner around the filter over the twist tie. Slide the filter into the clothespin. Use the extending ends of the pipe cleaner to secure the filter to the top of the clothespin. Wrap it around the head of the pin tightly. Arrange the remaining lengths of clothespin to look like antennas. Draw a face on the head of the pin.
Variations:
For colored butterflies, paint the clothespin first.
Use food coloring to decorate the coffee filter. Let the filter dry completely before proceeding.
Once you make the wings, you can add embellishments before secure the filter to the clothespin. Make different sizes and colors.
Glue on goggle eyes instead of drawing a face.
Use printed wrapping paper or light fabric to make wings instead of using a coffee filter. Simply cut the paper or fabric to approximately the same size, and fold back and forth as you would if you were making a paper fan. Follow the other steps above.
Idea:
For a cute bulletin board theme or wall display, hang a butterfly net with a brightly colored handle on the wall, and add your butterfly crafts. Add paper flowers, paper plate sun, and some fun bug crafts if desired.
