The little hiatus is over here at Families.com and I would love to tell you that during the break my eating and exercise routine has been on-point, but I do not fancy myself a liar, so I will say no such thing. To be honest, I have been having a rough stretch recently with sweets, cookies, donuts and soda entering my body at a way-too frequent clip. I have also been seen eating potato chips (which I do not really even enjoy) and ice cream (Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint – which I enjoy very much. I am helpless to its power).
During the last couple weeks, I have done a bit of traveling, which never tends to bode well for my diet as it usually involves eating out a bunch.
My family visited Clearwater Beach, Florida for a few days in the middle of March and, surprisingly, my eating was not too shabby while there. I always tend to eat less when the weather is warm, but that general rule did not hold true in Memphis, Tennessee. I spent a warm couple of days in the home of Elvis on business, boarding my flight less than 24 hours after my Florida Spring Training vacation ended. There, I had too much soda along with fried catfish, ribs, pulled pork, tiramisu, brownies and a lot more delicious Southern comfort food. For dinner at the Memphis airport, as I waited out a passing downpour of rain and a lightning storm, I became a rabbit – munching on salad only (not French fries, breadsticks, or soda!)
I seem to turn to salad only after days (or weeks) of eating unhealthy or, at best, unwise. For example, I have enjoyed a couple burgers and a handful of hot dogs from my grill over the past several days and at dinner tonight, at a local restaurant with an outdoor patio, I once again ordered up a simple salad (with light dressing, even!) If only it was a regularly scheduled meal instead of a fallback to normalcy, I would probably feel a lot better than I do at the present time.
In more positive news, I am officially not a New Year’s Resolution gym rat. Hurray!
I made it into the fourth month of the year and I am still going, albeit only about once a week right now. I have plans to purchase a basketball net/system for the driveway this summer. It should help me stay active on those days I do not wish to make the drive to the gym. I can, and often do when over my brother’s house, shot hoops for hours on end. I am absolutely no good, don’t let me mislead you, but I do enjoy those as-time-expires-pretend turn-around jumpers to win the game (that, like Memphis BBQ, never gets old!)
Until Saturday…
Enjoy the rest of your week!
