Looks like MTV is not the only cursed network around.
Just ask Olympic beach volleyball champ and current “DWTS” contestant Misty May-Treanor.
The gold medal athlete is recovering from a nasty spill that sent her to the hospital Friday afternoon. According to a statement released by ABC, the muscular looker was practicing her dance routine with pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy when she sustained an injury that required hospitalization. Network execs wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of May-Treanor’s injury, though they did deny that she broke her ankle.
The 31-year-old Olympic gold medallist has made it no secret that dancing in high heels has been a huge challenge for her given that she typically wears slippers or sneakers when she is not on the sand practicing her volleyball moves.
“The heels are so hard to walk in, let alone dance,” May-Treanor told reporters prior to her debut on “DWTS.”
According to ABC bigwigs the celebrity hoofer is “resting comfortably at home and doctors will reevaluate her condition on Monday and determine the outcome of her participation on the show.”
So, basically, fans are in the same spot that they were last season when actor Cristian de la Fuente tore a tendon in his left bicep. Back then viewers were told that they would find out if the buff heartthrob would continue to dance (he did, but with his arm in a sling) by tuning into the results show.
“DWTS” producers say they will announce the status of May-Treanor’s injury at the beginning of Monday night’s show.
May-Treanor’s injury is the third one sustained by a “DWTS” competitor this season alone. A few weeks ago, comedian Jeffrey Ross suffered a scratched cornea when his pro partner Edyta Sliwinska accidentally whacked his eye and pro dancer Karina Smirnoff sprained her ankle right before premiere night during a rehearsal with partner Rocco Di Spirito.
Other contestants on prior seasons of the popular dance competition also experienced their share of mishaps, including Marie Osmond’s famous fainting spell on live TV, pro dancer Derek Hough’s neck injury, and Jane Seymour’s emotional meltdown following the death of her mother last fall.
