I saw a report a couple of weeks ago regarding dangerous websites that teens are visiting. One of them is called “Formspring,” which is actually a social media outlet that allows members to ask and respond to anonymous questions.
The problem with this website is that it also promotes cyber-bullying. Vicious notes can be sent anonymously. This opens the door to all kinds of bullying like obscene language, derogatory comments and other unkind ways of interacting.
I wanted to personally look more into this website but it required signing up and I wasn’t quite ready for that. However it is a site that you should be aware of, particularly if you have teens using it.
Another dangerous website is “Miss Bimbo.” Yes, you read that right…Miss Bimbo and it is geared toward girls. This is a virtual dress-up game where you create a character, a Bimbo if you will, and enjoy perks like “a hot boyfriend.” You can even compete with other Bimbos to see who is the most popular and the best dressed
Demoralizing girls is one thing…but to encourage girls to do it to themselves, well, that is a whole new level. I find this website to be absolutely appalling.
There are probably millions of other websites that are dangerous to teens, sites that teach them how to have an eating disorder, how to cut themselves, commit suicide, and the list goes on.
It is just a reminder that we need to be vigilant about our children’s online activity. You should know what your teens are doing online, which websites they are visiting and which may appear harmless but actually aren’t.
Do your own research. Invest in a program that blocks certain sites or provides you a list of all websites visited. There are ways that we can take control of the computer, as much as our teens think they have the control.
