What makes a great date night DVD? These smart, sexy films challenge you with their mysteries, their characters and their witty dialogue. Here are my top picks that meet the criteria for smart, sexy and funny. So if you’re looking for a movie to rent tonight that would be great for you and the spouse to snuggle up and watch – here are my suggestions:
This movie features Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson and Selma Hayek in a smart criminal caper that is very reminiscent of an old Cary Grant film. A brilliant pair of thieves played by Brosnan and Hayek score the big one at the expense of an FBI agent played by Harrelson. They retire to an exotic and picturesque location in the Caribbean where Brosnan’s character is quite obviously bored. Enter Harrelson who tracked them down and is determined to arrest them for their thieving by luring Brosnan out of retirement by dangling the ultimate prize in his face. It’s a fun and funny movie with a few scenes that aren’t totally necessary – but I love how all the characters interact.
This is a remake of an original and features Faye Dunaway as Thomas Crown’s (Pierce Brosnan) psychiatrist. The plot revolves around a stolen painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art. Crown is filthy rich and an astute businessman – but he lacks a challenge in his life. He steals the painting for the thrill – and then he encounters Rene Russo’s investigator who sets out to prove he did it. The biggest question to ask yourself at the end of the movie is who caught whom as the two struggle for control in a very complicated game of cat and mouse. Dennis Leary has a great role as the New York detective assigned to the case.
You’ve probably heard of this little gem. It features a lot of big name actors including George Clooney, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) gets out of prison one day and is winging off to California the next to hook up with his old pal Rusty (Brad Pitt) and together they plan the heist of the century against three Las Vegas casinos owned by Garcia’s character. They enlist the assistance of nine other specialists including a Chinese acrobat who puts himself in some very tight spots all to score 200 million in cash and hopefully, Danny’s ex-wife. This movie is delightful in its entertainment value and worth watching again and again. Sadly, the sequel doesn’t quite deliver the same payoff as the first, but you can watch Ocean’s Twelve with Ocean’s Eleven for a fun double feature.
