In this VeggieTales movie, we find Bob and Larry on the kitchen counter, as usual. What is not usual is Larry’s outfit. He’s dressed as a superhero, with plungers sticking out from his head as ears, and he wants to be called “Larry Boy.” He’s decided that he’s not very special, but if he was a super hero, then he’d be really, really special.
Bob decides that what Larry needs (aside from a new wardrobe manager) is a lesson in self-esteem, and so he tells him the story of David and Goliath.
David (Junior Asparagus) lived on a sheep ranch with his brothers, and their main task was to keep the sheep from tipping over. It was hard work, let me tell you. When the nation of Israel goes to war against the Philistines, the brothers are eager to join the army. David stays behind to make sure the sheep remain on their feet. The brothers are having a great time off at war until the Philistines pull out their secret weapon – a giant pickle, who challenges their bravest warrior to come out and fight him. The Israelite army doesn’t know what to do.
The Veggie version of the Bible story follows pretty closely to text, with the inclusion of a song from Junior, “Little Guys Can Do Big Things Too.” He brings the pickle tumbling to the ground, showing that it doesn’t matter if the world thinks you’re big and important; it’s what’s inside that counts.
The show is punctuated by a “Silly Song from Larry,” in which Larry sings about how much he loves his lips, complete with the story of another kid named Oscar that he met while in lip rehab. You see, Oscar had been stung by a bee, and his lips were so swollen that he couldn’t even talk to Larry for a while. Odd, yes! Silly, yes! And that’s the fun of it!
By the end of the episode, Larry is feeling better about himself and recognizes that he doesn’t have to be a super hero in order to be important. That doesn’t keep him from dreaming about it, though!
