Before you became pregnant, you probably didn’t know that pregnancy can cause nasal congestion. This congestion is often not due to a cold or sinus infection. The condition is known as rhinitis of pregnancy and is very common. Some women are affected throughout the pregnancy, beginning in the first trimester.
Rhinitis of Pregnancy is caused by the increase in the hormone estrogen during pregnancy. Higher levels of estrogen swell the mucous membranes inside the nose. It can also cause more mucous to form. This swelling causes nasal congestion in the pregnant woman.
If you have a stuffy nose, but no other symptoms, the problem is most likely rhinitis of pregnancy. If you have other symptoms, such as cough or sore throat, see your doctor. Your problem is most likely a cold or other type of virus. If you are unsure, mention your symptoms to your doctor or midwife at your next visit.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition. Well, there is a cure, but it is birth! The condition generally clears shortly after the baby is born. Until then, you will have to deal with the symptoms and try a few natural remedies.
Natural Remedies to Try:
* Saline nose drops can help. These are sold over the counter in most drug stores. Put a couple drops in each nostril, wait a few minutes and blow the nose. This can be very effective for clearing the condition temporarily.
* A humidifier can help you sleep, if the congestion is interfering with your rest. Always clean the humidifier and add fresh water with each use. Leaving the water in the machine can cause bacteria to grow. This will aggravate allergies and make the congestion worse.
* If the congestion is making it difficult to sleep, elevate your head. Use a few pillows to prop your head, so you can breathe easier.
* Drink plenty of water every day. This may seem counter productive, since water is fluid and you are trying to get rid of fluid, but it works. When you are well hydrated, the mucous secretions become thinner. This makes it easier to get rid of the mucous and helps you breathe easier.
